JOHN PAUL II REMEMBERED
The body of Pope John Paul II is lying in state in the Vatican as officials pay their last respects.

The body of the 84-year-old is in the Clementine Room of the Apostolic Palace, flanked by Swiss Guards.

Prelates and Italy's president and prime minister are among those who have stood in line in a procession by his remains to pay their last respects one by one.

His body is to be transferred to St Peter's Basilica tomorrow about 5pm for public viewing.

The procession follows a Requiem Mass held in St Peter's Square, attended by thousands of mourners.

More than 100,000 pilgrims flocked to the Mass to pray for the pontiff who died at 8.37pm BST on Saturday, 9.37pm Rome time.

The Pope led the world's one billion Catholics for more than 26 years.

Today's Mass was led by Vatican official Cardinal Angelo Sodano and began with a solemn parade of the College of Cardinals down the steps of the basilica as a choir sang.

Each cardinal, dressed in flowing white robes with a golden cross on the chest, kissed the altar before taking his seat.

Cardinal Angelo told the open-air congregation: "It is true. Our father and shepherd, John Paul II has left us.

"For 26 years he carried the Gospel of Christian hope to all the squares around the world, teaching everyone that our death is only a passage to heavenly fatherland."

Archbishop Leonardo Sandri read out the Pope's last message: "To humanity, which sometimes seems to be lost and dominated by the power of evil, selfishness and fear, the risen Lord gives the gift of his love which forgives, reconciles and reopens the soul to hope.

"Love converts hearts and gives peace."

On Monday, cardinals will meet to begin making plans for his funeral, which is not expected before Wednesday.
