PlayStation 3 Revealed
Sony dishes the dirt on its next-gen hardware.
by Jeremy Parish, 05/16/2005

Sony has unveiled the next generation of its best-selling PlayStation hardware, promising a piece of kit far more powerful than Microsoft's recently unveiled Xbox 360. Although the ultimate proof will be in the software, the systems' specs are impressive. The PlayStation 3 -- slated for a Spring 2006 release in the U.S. -- runs on the highly-vaunted CELL chip. The PS3's CELL consists of a 64-bit PowerPC core running at 3.2 GHz and enhanced by eight 32-bit "synergistic processing units," capable of performing 216 gigaflops. NVIDIA is providing the 550 MHz GPU, which is rated at 1.8 teraflops.

The PS3 hardware features several forms of connectivity, including 1000BASE-T Ethernet and 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi (the same standard used by the PSP), as well as USB 2.0 and a variety of flash memory inputs such as Sony's proprietary Memory Stick. The oddly-shaped wireless controllers will connect to the system via Bluetooth. The machine will support TVs running in 1080p progressive scan mode, meaning Sony will be tagging along for Microsoft's bold foray into the "HD era."

The PS3 will run games from 54GB Blu-Ray DVDs but is backwards-compatible with PlayStation and PS2 games. Looking forward, a wide array of developers and publishers have pledged their support for the machine: Electronic Arts, Konami and Namco, among others.

Games revealed at the PS3 press conference include a new chapter in the Killzone series, Warhawk, Capcom's Devil May Cry 4, M.S. Gundam, a new Tekken, a sequel to Rockstar's Red Dead Revolver, Formula 1 from SCEE, Insomniac's upcoming WWII-meets-Starship Troopers first-person shooter I-8, a game called Ni-Oh by Koei (which was distinctly Kessen-esque in style), Fifth Phantom Saga from Sega, Heavenly Sword from SCEI, Eyedentify, Killing Day (from Ubisoft), and finally a game called MotorStorm. (Click any of the games listed above for screenshots.)

First off, Wi-Fi is coming with all 3 systems. Remember to read all the specs first.

2nd PS3 is more powerfull then the 360(crappy name). I say let the 360 come out first and fall flat on it's face. I've never played a XCRAP and never well. I'll wait for the PS3 and new Nintendo for my gaming needs. With Sony and Nintendo making gaming systems who needs XCRAP........

^^agreed
it's funny, now all the XBOX'ers are trying to justify getting the XBOX360 for its games.. hah, what a joke - Sony has always had the lead on gameplay and sheer number of titles.. and the only real advantage the XBOX had was that it's graphics were better..

now with the PS3, it's got better graphics, and even without talking about the new games that will be coming out, the PS3 will be able to play all our favorite PS1 and PS2 games..
as for the XBOX.. all they have is halo..

I think it's decided that Sony have better games for their console.. and as for the graphics...

PS3 : 218 GFLOPS

I think it's time for the proverbial 'tygg' =)

lol people seem to forget the ONLY reason xbox had ps2 beat on gfx and stuff was it came out a few years AFTER ps2 and basicly had doubled the specs again...funny how ps2 matched the xbox still give or take with less to work with...

But the ps3 is gonna come out years after the xbox 360 so its not fair mike

Lol, face it, unless microsolf has some magic chip in their machines or something, we all know who won this round before the fights begun.
