For those of you deciding to upgrade video cards, I would like to let everone know about a current issue with the new x1600 and above cards. It isnt really a major problem, they are major power hogs and heat up fast. Make sure you have a good power supply and add cooling fans to keep the system cool. This is something that is not commonly stated when buying the cards. As far as performance, I tried it on lineage2 and it works great. It was well worth the money.

Thanks for this, gzin.

I'm ordering all my new components to build my new PC today.

Here are the specs:

Asus A8V-E SE VIA K8T890 (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard
400W PSU
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 90nm Processor
Corsair 2GB DDR
XFX GeForce PCX6600 Extreme Edition 512MB DDR2 TV-Out/Dual DVI
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 160GB 1600JB ATA-100 8MB Cache

PC should last at least 4 years before needing an Upgrade. I suspect the Graphics Card and Processor need an upgrade after that time.

All in all, that system's gonna cost £530. Not too bad.

By the way, why AMD? I've done loads, and LOADS of research in the past week about "Intel vs AMD". Pentium 4's suck (I know... incredible!), AMD's rock. So, AMD it is!

Hey Liam,

I ordered from OverClockers.co.uk . Very reliable, very good.
The total cost of the system was ?520.
I read so much about all the components - Intel vs AMD , nVidia vs ATI, etc., and decided that those are the best components for me.

The hard drive is only 160, but it sure beats the 40gig I had before! Already used more than that!

My system has 5 fans - before, I'd wake up to a nice warm room from my PC - now it's freezing!

Heh.

Good luck,
Dave.

The issue of videocards came up a couple weeks ago when i was buying my computer, except the video card was the x1900 XTX between dual 256 PCI Express nVidia Geforce 6800's (SLI motherboard). I talked to some friends at school and one personally had problems with the ATI card on his computer. He said he had major heating issues. So I stuck with the dual Nvidias. Here's my specs:

-Pentium® D Processor 930 with Dual Core Technology (3.0GHz, 800FSB)
-250 GB Hard drive
-Dual 256MB PCI Express nVidia GeForce 6800
-2 Gig Ram
-Sound Blaster Audigy (forget which type, its the Sound Card)

I've also got a 21" flat panel LCD monitor too. It's seriously one "b*tchin" computer.

nVidia > ATI imo, especially if you're a gamer.
