Hi Val,

I've had this problem before. I know, it sucks. I think I ended up formatting, because I couldn't be arsed to faff around with the recovery console. But here's a suggestion.

When this happens, it usually means kernel32.dll (C:\WINDOWS\system32\) is corrupt. You can try and replace this file from your XP CD by doing this:

1) Insert the XP CD.
2) Power up the PC.
3) Make the CD load. To do this, you usually press F10, F12, Insert or Delete. Sometimes F8. Just keep randomly whacking keys till you get a Startup Menu appear, asking where you want to boot from. Keep trying!
4) When the text-based part of setup begins (all the blue screens), choose to "Repair or Recover" ®.

5) Once you're in the Recovery Console, type:
cd system32

6) Type:
ren kernel32.dll kernel32.dll.bak
(backup of your current kernel32.dll)

7) Type:
map

8) Assuming your the XP CD is in Drive D:, type:
expand D:\i386\kernel32.dl_
(note the underscore!)

You should now see a message about kernel32.dll being expanded...

Restart, and everything _should_ work.

As I said, I couldn't ever be arsed to faff around with the recovery console, but whatever.

Let me know how it goes,
Dave.
